I was in London yesterday for a really interesting session on Language, Community and Identity at the British Academy (which is a very swish building btw). I’ll do an update on that on Tuesday, but when I was on the train down from Birmingham (on a train that seemed to stop at every station in middle England…), I started reading The Metro and came across a nice comic strip which exploited the idea of phatic communication (that is more social talk or ‘small talk’) to quite funny effect.
